I started out with a shakespeare baitcaster also, it was good to learn the basics, I like to use berkely big game 14lb… you get alot of it and its pretty cheap and tough for what I do(bass n striper),,, I keep it in a black plastic bag to keep the sun off it when I store it,,, FYI there are no parts for your reel so once that one goes its time to get a new one,,, when you upgrade to a better reel make sure there are parts and service available for most of them, most med to upper end brands do… I used mine for a couple years so good luck and happy fishing.
Look up HOW TO CAST A BAITCASTER on YouTube… it will show you how to adjust your reel so you dont get those backlashes and it will show you how to clear them also,,, its pretty cool

How many bearings should a good spinning reel have?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by brandonolsono: How many bearings should a good spinning reel have?
I’m shopping for a new fishing reel for this spring. I noticed that all of the spinning reels tell how many bearings they have. Is it better to have less or more bearings, and what purpose do they serve, what advantage do they give you?

Ball bearings help a piece of machinery move more smoothly. In a reel there are generally several little balls captured between two concentric circular parts, one circle connected to the body of the reel and the other to the part which turns (the handle, for example). As the handle turns, the little balls roll and let the handle turn more easily. Old or cheap reels which don’t have bearings rely on grease to keep turning smoothly, and they can stick or jam, especailly with heavy use or when pulling on a big fish.
More bearings help these parts move more smoothly, especially under the pressure of winding against a heavy fish. However, as long as the ball bearings are there, a difference of one or two probably won’t make much of a difference.

I just bought a 5′6”, Extra Heavy, 1 piece Lamiglas Big Fish Conventional Rod with Roller Stripper Guide and Roller Tip Top, and I wanted to know what big game big casting reel would go well with it. The line weight for the rod is 50-100 lbs.
